The municipalities check that the rules are being complied with at the outlets. Each municipality itself determines how and how often the checks are to be carried out and what fee is to be charged for inspections. Any serious deficiencies which are found during the checks must be reported to the Swedish MPA.

Selling certain non-prescription medicinal products in retail trade is a way of creating good availability. At the same time, clear rules are needed when a product as potent as a medicinal product is sold by staff with no pharmaceutical training and in completely different environments than in pharmacies.

By conducting checks and maintaining dialogue with retailers, the municipalities’ inspectors play a decisive role in enabling Sweden to continue to be one of the world's safest countries in terms of medicinal products.

Reporting serious deficiencies

The municipality must report serious deficiencies to the Swedish Medical Products Authority which has overall supervisory responsibility and therefore can take measures in the form of injunctions and prohibitions combined with fines.
