During the winter months, many people use medicines to relieve colds. The consumption of nasal sprays, throat lozenges and cough medicines is particularly high. But you have to be careful even with "ordinary" over-the-counter medicine. Here are five tips to help you avoid the most common mistakes and use the medicine in the best way.

1. Read the package leaflet

Have you ever thrown away the package insert without even reading it? Then it's time to change that. In the package leaflet you will find important information about your medicin: how much to take it, how often and what to avoid when taking the medicine. Read the package leaflet before using the medicine and do not hesitate to consult the pharmacist if you have questions about non-prescription use.

2. Stick to the recommended dose

Are you thinking of taking an extra dose of nasal spray or double pain reliever to get rid of the stuffy nose or headache? Don't do anything you're not sure about. When it comes to medicines, it is important that you follow the instructions. Taking too much or not enough can affect the effect or cause you to have side effects.

3. Do not combine drugs without double checking

Some medicines do not work well together. They can affect each other and increase your risk of side effects. The same also applies to dietary supplements, which may also be inappropriate to combine with medications. Make it a habit to inform your doctor or talk to the pharmacist if you are taking several medicines or supplements.

4. Store medicines correctly and safely

Make sure to store home medicines in a safe place, so that no children or young people can access them. Most medicines should be stored in a dry place at room temperature. Your medicine cabinet should not be an unlocked drawer in the kitchen or a shelf in the hall. Even over-the-counter medications can cause harm if used incorrectly.

5. Dispose of old medicines in a proper manner

Throwing medicines in the garbage or flushing them down the toilet is never okay. It can damage the environment and our waterways. Bring your old or unused medicines to the pharmacy the next time you pass by. And remember to put them in a transparent bag, then the staff will be happy.

Keep in mind that your immune system takes care of the cold just fine.

Medicines can relieve the symptoms, but usually rest, fluids and patience are at least as important.

Listen to your body and try to give it time to recover.
